Why I Carry Noise-Canceling Headphones Everywhere

As an autism mom, there are certain things I never leave the house without — and noise-canceling headphones are always one of them.
Whether we’re heading to the grocery store, a family gathering, or just a walk through the mall, JoJo (my youngest) can get overwhelmed so quickly. The lighting, the hum of conversations, the unpredictable sounds — it’s a lot for his little nervous system to handle.
And when I forget them? Oh boy… I can see the spiral coming.
He clenches his jaw, hides behind me, or breaks down in tears.
I’ve learned — it’s not about “avoiding the world,” it’s about giving him the tools to experience the world at his own pace.
💙 The headphones give him a bubble of calm.
💙 They give me peace of mind.
💙 They let us stay just a little longer at places other families take for granted.
So if you’re new to this journey — don’t feel guilty for making your child comfortable. You’re not spoiling them. You’re empowering them.
Mama Love tip: I keep a small drawstring pouch in my purse with:
JoJo’s headphones
A chewy necklace
A mini fidget spinner (of course Jay Jay’s favorite orange one 💛)
One printed calming visual
We can’t control the world — but we can give our kids anchors in the storm. 💕
